When there is a large oil spill in the ocean, it causes an oil slick that covers miles of ocean. The oil cuases fish to die. It also hurts water birds. Water birds have a natural coating that makes their feathers water-resistant. Oil disables the water resistance in the birds' feathers and causes them to be unable to fly. They are also unable to stay afloat and often drown.
